Recent CSCS Green Card Changes

10 February 2025

The CSCS Green Card scheme has recently undergone some important updates as of 1st February 2025, particularly regarding validity periods and the renewal process.
Understanding these changes is essential for anyone working on UK construction sites. This blog explains what the updates mean and how you can ensure your qualifications remain current.

The Two-Year Standard:

For all new applicants, CSCS Green Cards are now issued with a two-year validity period. This reinforces the construction skills certification scheme standards that keep workers’ health and safety knowledge up to date.

Five-Year Card Holders and providing evidence:

If you currently hold a five-year CSCS Green Card, you won’t automatically transition to a two-year card upon expiry. You can renew for another five years, but only if you provide evidence of employment in a labourer course role or related construction activity. This typically requires a signed letter from your employer or, if self-employed, from a main contractor.

Providing this evidence ensures that individuals renewing for five years are actively engaged in construction, maintaining their skills and awareness of construction health and safety courses.

Who do you need to do?

New applicants – To receive a two-year CSCS Green Card, complete the CSCS card course with an approved provider such as COSAC’s Safe2Site. This includes the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment and passing the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test.

Existing five-year cardholders – Contact your employer well in advance to obtain the necessary employment verification letter and ensure it meets CSCS requirements.

Top tip – Many previous learners asked us, Can you do the day course online to gain a CSCS? The answer, simply put, is yes – Safe2Site and other CITB-approved training providers allow you to complete your Level 1 Health and Safety qualification entirely online, so you’re prepared for the official CSCS Green Card test.

Staying Up-to-Date!

Always refer to the official CSCS website for the latest guidance. Processes and requirements can change, so staying informed ensures continued compliance and access to construction sites.
If you’ve ever wondered, “Can you do a course to get your CSCS online?” the answer is also yes! Online courses provide flexible study hours, interactive modules and practice tests so you can complete your qualification at your own pace, from home or on the go.

In Conclusion:

The recent updates to the CSCS Green Card scheme are designed to keep UK construction workers safe, competent and fully qualified. By understanding the new two-year standard, ensuring your employment evidence is ready, and taking advantage of online courses, you can keep your CSCS Green Card valid and maintain uninterrupted access to construction sites.

Taking the right steps now ensures you’re prepared, qualified and ready for a safe and successful career in the construction industry.
