If you’re working in the construction industry, a CSCS green labourer card is something you might want to consider obtaining for credibility. Why? Because it is a widely recognised smart card providing evidence of a level of health and safety training relevant to the industry. There are also more than 1.6 million CSCS card holders in the UK. The scheme has recently moved away from providing cards to unqualified persons and is increasing the minimum level of qualification required to hold a card.
Your skills are your major advantage when working or planning to work in the construction industry. Employers will always need proof to support your claims of efficiency in health & safety and a CSCS green labourer card is the easiest way to show this. The construction industry is one of the most important yet most dangerous fields today and having skilled and competent workers is essential.
There are 13 different types of CSCS cards available, however, the CSCS green labourer card is specifically for those who are at an entry level into the industry. It does still require a qualification that shows you have a basic level of understanding of the workings of a construction site and awareness of important health and safety considerations.
There are a range of qualifications that are accepted in application for this card, the main ones being the QCF Level 1/SCQF Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment or SCQF Level 5 REHIS Elementary Health and Safety Certificate.
Firstly, submit a CSCS application form. There are corresponding application forms depending on your skills and occupation which could be one of the following:
To order to receive your CSCS green labourer card, you will need to pass the relevant Health, Safety and Environment Test. Also referred to as the HS&E Test, this type of test is a major component in order to obtain a CSCS card and should be taken within two years from the date of application.
The test is composed of 50 multiple choice questions that need to be completed within 45 minutes.
12 questions are related to behavioural case study about the “Setting Out” video. The video talks about the different safety measures on the construction site as well as tips on promoting a safer working environment on the site. Additionally, 38 questions will test your knowledge of health, safety and environment issues.
The primary purpose of the HS&E test is to improve the health and safety awareness among workers in order to reduce accidents, injuries and death on the construction site. For all the categories, a score of 47 out of 50 must be obtained in order to pass.
Once these requirements are met, you will be eligible for a CSCS Card after a fee of £22.00 for the test and £36.00 for the card must be paid by the applicant. This is important in order to ensure competency, skill and quality of work of all the workers. At the same time, construction-related risks such as accidents or deaths will be reduced since every individual is equipped with basic health, safety and environmental awareness.
Once you’ve passed – congratulations! The CSCS green labourer card is valid for five years and can be renewed after this time. If you have gained further qualifications after five years, you may need to apply for a new card. Further types other than the initial green card are:
